DAVID POTORTI is one of the founding members of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows and author of the book "September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows: Turning Our Grief into Action for Peace." September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows represents more than 100 family members of September 11th victims and 3,000 supporters. David lost his oldest brother, Jim, at the World Trade Center, where he was a vice president/systems analyst for Marsh McLennan. Members of the "Peaceful Tomorrows" group have traveled to Afghanistan, Iraq, Japan, Korea, India, Turkey, Italy and Britain, and are currently organizing the first international gathering of families affected by terrorism and war.
The Peaceful Tomorrows organization was nominated for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize.

David, who lives in Cary and has a journalist background, spoke on behalf of the group in Tokyo and Seoul, South Korea over the Thanksgiving holiday. Last month, he was the recipient of the 2003 North Carolina International Human Rights Award.

TOPIC: "A Victim's Viewpoint: What Are the Real Sources of Security in a World Threatened by Terrorism?"

David will also talk about recent activities and plans of the Peaceful Tomorrow group.

WHEN AND WHERE: Both meetings at Meredith College -- details below

  • Luncheon -- 12:00 in the Oak Room under the Belk Dining Hall (use entrance to Meredith off Faircloth, then right at the stop sign). Food will be a deli style buffet with salads and a fruit bowl.
    Cost: $10 if reserved by 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 19;
    $12 if reserved later.
  • 5 to 7 meeting -- food available at 5:00 p.m., talk will start at 5:30. Meeting is in the Commons Room at the back of the chapel (use Hillsborough entrance, go through the first circle toward the Administration building, turn left into the parking lot just before entering the 2nd circle at the Administration building).
    A box lunch will be served. Cost: $5
