The Wake County Chapter of the United Nations Association
invites you to our February 8th, 2005 Program Meeting:

Tuesday the 8th — at 6:00pm

Topic:

Women as Perpetrators, Victims of Violence, & Peace Builders: A Critique of religion, culture, & gender vis-a-vis spiritualized violence in the Northern Ugandan conflict

Speaker:

George Piwang-Jalobo, Founder & Director of the Center for Conflict Management and Peace Studies, Gulu University, Uganda (East Africa)

The 18-year old insurgency led by the so-called Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has wreaked untold suffering in Northern Uganda. Estimates suggest that over 20,000 children have been abducted by the LRA, tortured and abused. The girls are forcibly turned into sex slaves as "wives" of rebel commanders, with many becoming scarred child mothers and/or infected with HIV/AIDS. Over 1.6 million people have fled from their homes and hundreds have been killed.

George brings us a personal experience with the tragedy in Northern Uganda, which has been described as the "world's most forgotten tragedy" by international humanitarian agencies, through his involvement: (1) in development and poverty work among the poor in Northern Uganda, including promotion of education, especially girls' education; and (2) with an inter-faith religious leaders' peace initiative seeking a peaceful end to the Northern Uganda conflict.

George will also briefly describe the activity of the UN Associations in the United Kingdom and Uganda in publicizing the problems in Northern Uganda.

The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) publication "FAWE (Uganda) Profile 2003" contains several related publications authored by George Piwang-Jalobo and others.
