“The UNA's humanitarian campaigns Adopt-A-Minefield and HERO”
The Adopt-A-Minefield (AAM) Campaign was created by the UNA-USA in partnership with the United Nations, Ted Turner’s Better World Fund, and the U.S. State Department to clear minefields, provide assistance to landmine survivors, and raise awareness of the global landmine crisis. It is estimated that there are between 45 and 50 million landmines in the ground in at least 70 countries. Landmines reportedly maim or kill 10,000 civilians every year. Those who survive endure a lifetime of physical, psychological, and economic hardship. HERO is an awareness-building and fundraising initiative dedicated to helping support children living in HIV/AIDS-affected communities in sub-Saharan Africa. This new initiative, in partnership with USAID (United States Agency for International Development), strives to better the lives of children who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS by providing comprehensive, holistic school-based support. “Human Rights, An Endangered Concept: The United Nations and the Advancement of Human Rights”
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. Eleanor Roosevelt, who headed the international committee that drafted it, called it “a magna carta for all mankind.” The rights defined by the Declaration have become a standard for human behavior. But they have also been much abused ever since they were drafted. We therefore believe it is time to review those rights, the contributions of the United Nations to advancing them, and their relevance for the 21st century. For this reason our Chapters are sponsoring this Conference on Advancing Human Rights. March 2007Thursday, the 22nd 6:30pmUNA Wake County celebrates International Women’s Day
