The Wake County Chapter of the United Nations Association
invites you to our April 19th, 2005 Program Meeting:

Topic:

The Work of the UN in the Developing World

The world heard President Bush, in the United States annual address to the General Assembly in 2001, question the relevance of the United Nations. However, that refrain has since been dropped as the U.N. repeatedly demonstrated not only its relevance but its indispensability - to the United States in particular and world order generally - in relation to America's wars on terror and in Iraq. But the U.N.'s relevance goes far beyond its relationship to the United States, as important as that is, and the realm of international security, as critical as that is. The world body is also charged by its Charter to "promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom," a responsibility of critical importance to the poorest countries of the world which comprise the overwhelming majority of its 191 member states and are home to two-thirds of humanity, and to the developed countries whose prosperity depends, in part, upon peace and stability in the developing world.

We are fortunate to have Ms. Mwila Chigaga, a Rotary World Peace Scholar from Zambia in Duke University's programme for international development, join us at our April Program meeting to discuss the work and relevance of the United Nations in the developing world.

Speaker:

Mwila Chigaga, a Rotary World Peace Scholar from Zambia in Duke University's programme for international development, is an expert on international law and human rights and Principal State Advocate of the Government of Zambia and advisor to the Zambian Attorney General.
