United Nations Association Wake County North Carolina

Annual United Nations Day Dinner

Sixty-Third Anniversary of the United Nations

Topic:

34 Million Friends of the United Nations Population Fund

Speaker:

Jane Roberts, author and co-founder of 34 Million Friends of the UNFPA

Background:

Jane Roberts and Lois Abraham established 34 Million Friends of UNFPA in 2002 in response to the Bush Administration’s refusal to release $34 million that Congress had allocated to the United Nations Population Fund. The goal of their project was to ask 34 million Americans to donate at least $1 as a way of showing support for the work of UNFPA. The UNFPA helps the most vulnerable women in the world plan their families, give birth safely and protect themselves from HIV/AIDS. It promotes the rights of women, and it works world- wide to eliminate gender-based violence. Ms. Roberts will discuss the role of the UNFPA in the world and how its work ties in with the Millennium Development Goals and the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo. More information can be found on her website.
