Topic:Widows With Strength International The plight of widows around the world becomes direr each day because of wars, regional conflicts, increased numbers of refugees, and HIV/AIDS. Speaker:We will be able to hear, first hand, about a creative organization in Zambia that has addressed effectively some of the problems of widows. This organization is Widows With Strength International. It’s Executive Director, Mwaba Barcelos, and Board Member, David Swanson, will speak to us about Zambia and the 10 year history of Widows With Strength International. The empowerment strategies used by the organization, its successes, and its future challenges will be discussed. One of the driving forces behind this organization is Mwila Chigaga, who spoke to our membership in 2005 and also participated as a workshop presenter at our UN60 Conference. Ms. Chigaga, an attorney with the Zambian government and a 2005-2006 Rotary Scholar at Duke/UNC, serves on the Board of WWSI. UNA-Wake Board Members Ann Seng and Anne Markowich have worked with this organization. Because of the worthiness of this organization and its mission, the Wake-UNA Board of Directors voted to become a fundraising partner of WWSI.
