Topic:The UNA's humanitarian campaigns Adopt-A-Minefield and HERO Speaker:Ms Daniela Gorelov, marketing manager of the United Nations Association of the USA, is a graduate of Brandeis University. She majored in Political Science concentrating on Middle East issues. She is fluent in Hebrew and Russian and has a working knowledge of Arabic. Background:The Adopt-A-Minefield (AAM) Campaign was created by the UNA-USA in partnership with the United Nations, Ted Turner’s Better World Fund, and the U.S. State Department to clear minefields, provide assistance to landmine survivors, and raise awareness of the global landmine crisis. It is estimated that there are between 45 and 50 million landmines in the ground in at least 70 countries. Landmines reportedly maim or kill 10,000 civilians every year. Those who survive endure a lifetime of physical, psychological, and economic hardship. HERO is an awareness-building and fundraising initiative dedicated to helping support children living in HIV/AIDS-affected communities in sub-Saharan Africa. This new initiative, in partnership with USAID (United States Agency for International Development), strives to better the lives of children who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS by providing comprehensive, holistic school-based support.
