Women's Human Rights and Gender Equality 10 Years after the Beijing World Conference on Women
A report on the latest UN findings on developments in women's rights

The Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China in September 1995 was designed to remove "all the obstacles to women's active participation in all spheres of public and private life through a full and equal share in economic, social, cultural and political decision-making." "The principle of shared power and responsibility should be established between women and men at home, in the workplace and in the wider national and international communities." The document has been ratified by 189 countries.

Ms. Dehghan, who has been attending all of the special sessions of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) to review the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action for the last 10 years, has just returned from the 2005 conference in NY, which was attended by over 6,000 women from all regions of the world. Ms. Dehghan will give us the latest score card of the countries of the world — plus special comments about Iran, her birthplace.

Speaker:

Behjat (Beth) Dehghan has been a human rights activist for over 25 years. She was the founder and president of the Association of Iranian Women – USA (AIWUSA), an association actively involved in advocating Iranian women's rights in US and Europe, including lobbying with members of the U.S. Congress. She has also lectured on Islamic Fundamentalism and Women. She moved to North Carolina in 1997 and established the Association of International Women for Human Rights (AIWHR), which she heads.
