Speakers:
Julie Marantette, Assistant Director of Outreach &
World View is an international program for educators at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, created in 1998 to support global education through professional development of educators. World View collaborates with other international programs on campus, other UNC campuses, private universities, and area international organizations to sponsor symposia, seminars, and workshops to increase awareness of our interdependent world. World View has taken educators to many different destinations, including Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and Central America. The heart of a World View study visit is the contact with local teachers and administrators through school visits and informal get-togethers. These experiences give travelers a close, friendly introduction to a country's culture through its people and make possible continuing relationships with new colleagues. Participants return from their World View study visit ready to enrich their classroom teaching and school administration with their new, more global viewpoint. Julie Kinnaird, World View assistant director for outreach, will discuss last year's World View trip to Eastern Europe — she led a group of 29 educators on a study visit to Prague, Krakow, and Budapest. Regina Higgins, assistant director for curriculum, will discuss plans for the June trip to Spain. She can also elaborate on World View's activities with teachers to support global education in every academic subject. In a previous talk to our group, Julie shared a little about her Peace Corps service in Albania. Regina studied in England for a year in college and has traveled to Italy, Ireland, Sweden, and Denmark. Special emphasis well be on the World View trip with teachers to Eastern Europe last year, the upcoming trip to Spain this year, and the work of World View to support global education in every academic subject.
