United Nations Association Wake County North Carolina

(Note: This event is presented by the West Triangle Chapter. The presentation is also scheduled in Raleigh at the March Program Meeting of the Wake County Chapter.)

Topic:

Nepal - Country in the Middle

Speaker:

Deependra Thapa

Nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, Nepal is one of the poorest and least known nations in the world. Occupying a key "buffer" position between China and India, its democratic but fractious government was recently summarily dismissed by Nepal's king because of its inability to deeat a brutal decade-long "Maoist" rebellion which has killed some 10,000 people. Deependra Thapa, a high-level Nepalese civil servent with broad policy making experience, currently a Hubert H. Humphrey fellow at UNC-Chapel Hill, will discuss the developments of the last decade which are changing the face of his country.
